Hackberry Fruit grows best on area soils, but throughout much of its range it's also generally seen on slopes and bluffs. In the american portion of its range, nevertheless, it is confined to properly-developed river valleys, north slopes, and ravines that were protected, and it is mostly missing from wind swept areas of the american river valleys. It is not unusual in eastern Iowa on all but the wettest bottom land sites, and seedling and shrub hackberry occur under present oak stands on slopes all elements, and ridges on upland sites.
